 Principal’s Update

Book Week - next week

Kia ora Waitetuna Whaanau, it has been lovely enjoying the sun this week. It has been a pleasure visiting classrooms to see the wonderful, and varying led learning happening. The students appeared very excited when we discussed the Book Week activities planned for next week. Appreciating books is an essential part of our school culture. The book character dress-up day on Wednesday with the Booknic and food for sale from our PTA is a now permanent fixture on our school calendar.

On Monday with an extra breakfast the students will visit our Book Fair with their class and get to choose a Wish List. Book Sales will be available on Monday from 2.45pm-3.45pm and on Tuesday (no children allowed) from 2.45-3.45pm, handy if you have a child’s birthday coming up. Also on Tuesday from 5.00pm-5.30pm if you can’t make it earlier in the day. On Wednesday the Book Fair will be open from 12.30-2.00pm after the Booknic. Burgers sausages and fizzy drinks will be for sale. There will be some vegetarian and gluten free options available. On Thursday book sales are available on Thursday from 8.30-9.30am and then last chance on Friday from 8.30-9am. On Thursday we have a special show coming to celebrate some New Zealand books from 11.20am and on Friday for assembly we have a very special guest coming to share their adventures to Antarctica and the Artic Circle. Assembly will start at 2pm on Friday 14th June.

We also had Lisa Rapana in classes modelling for staff how to support students with the acquisition of a second language. All teachers and students were learning additional kupu (words) and phrases this week. This acquisition model works with learning any second language too. Our seniors get a taster of a second language. Last year we learnt Korean and not only will we continue our learning of Te Reo Maaori but we will also learn some Spanish. This is part of our year 7 and 8 programme and is an expectation of the New Zealand Curriculum. Have a great weekend, Amanda and staff.
