Inter School Speech Competition

Principal's Update

Kia ora Waitetuna Whaanau, congratulations to our Year 5 and 6 students who competed at the Inter School Speech Competition on Wednesday evening. It was great to hear how well they presented and congratulations to Tāwhai for earning 2nd place in the Year 6 competition.

Kapahaka—there has been so much mahi being put into the Kapahaka performance practices. It is exciting to see the tamariki continuing to build on their performance skills.

Before School Care—Liz Macdonald has accepted the High School bus run role so has resigned from Before School Care. We thank her immensely for her time doing this mahi. We will still see Liz from time to time as she can still do some relief teacher aide mahi for us, albeit starting a little later. Jennie Cursons will be back doing this role permanently. Ngaa mihi nui to Liz and Jennie.

Keeping Ourselves Safe—Keeping Ourselves Safe lessons will be happening in classes in week 9. Its purpose is to:

  • teach students a range of safe practices that they can use when interacting with other people, both online and face to face

  • teach students how to recognise the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships, and encourage students who have been or are being abused to seek help

  • prevent abuse by making parents and teachers more aware of their responsibilities to help students avoid abuse.

Tom our community constable will be joining us during week 9 to complete a session in each class. He joined our staff meeting this week to plan and implement Keeping Ourselves Safe with teachers.

2026 Planning—during the next few board meetings our new board will be working on our school strategic plan for 2026 and beyond. During learning conferences I took the opportunity to discuss with you what our school’s future could look like. If you have had any further thoughts on this or didn’t get the chance to share ideas with me please come and see me or send an email. I look forward to having these discussions with staff and the board in the coming weeks too. As our school motto and the whakatauki states working together makes our school stronger.

Have a great weekend. Ngaa mihi Amanda
